This is a road-trip style experience, so expect approximately 12–14 hours of driving in total over the three days, depending on the exact route, road conditions and the stops you choose.
Ulaanbaatar to Kharkhorin is approximately 357–360 km by road, while Hustai National Park is around 82 km west of Ulaanbaatar, plus the park access road.
The journey itself is part of the experience: Mongolia’s wide open steppe, changing landscapes and roadside stops make the drive very different from a typical city-to-city transfer.
📍 DAY 1 — Ulaanbaatar → Hustai → Elsen Tasarkhai → Kharkhorin
Approximately 6–7 hours of driving + sightseeing
Your private journey begins in Ulaanbaatar.
We’ll leave the city and head west into the open Mongolian steppe.
🐎 Hustai National Park

Our first major stop is Hustai National Park, famous for its successful conservation of the Przewalski’s horse, or takhi — the world’s only surviving wild horse species.
The park has different wildlife routes, and depending on the season and conditions, you may have opportunities to see takhi, marmots, deer and birds of prey.
Important: Wildlife is wild, so sightings cannot be guaranteed.
What you can do:
- Wildlife spotting
- Photography
- Short nature walks
- Scenic viewpoints
- Learn about Mongolia’s wild horse conservation
🏜️ Elsen Tasarkhai

Continue west towards Elsen Tasarkhai, where golden sand dunes meet the surrounding steppe and mountains.
Depending on your interests and the season, you can:
🐫 Ride a camel
📸 Photograph the dunes
🥾 Walk through the sand
🏕️ Visit a local nomadic family
You don’t have to rush.
This is a private tour — if you want more time in the dunes, we can spend more time here.
🏨 Arrive in Kharkhorin

Continue to Kharkhorin, the modern settlement beside the site of ancient Karakorum.
Overnight:
Clean, Comfortable hotel or Ger camp with toilet and shower.
🏛️ DAY 2 — Ancient Karakorum & Erdene Zuu
Approximately 2–3 hours of local driving + sightseeing
Today is the historical heart of your journey.
🏺 Karakorum Museum

Start your day at the Karakorum Museum, which was established to preserve and present archaeological and cultural heritage connected with ancient Karakorum and the Mongol Empire.
The museum’s permanent and temporary exhibitions include archaeological discoveries from the area.
🏛️ Ancient Karakorum

Explore the archaeological remains of Karakorum, the ancient capital associated with the Mongol Empire.
Your local guide will help bring the history to life — not simply show you ruins, but explain:
- Why Karakorum was built here
- How the city developed
- Its role in the Mongol Empire
- Trade and cultural connections
- What archaeologists have discovered
⛩️ Erdene Zuu Monastery

Continue to Erdene Zuu Monastery, one of Mongolia’s most important surviving Buddhist heritage sites.
The monastery was founded in 1586 by Avtai Khan and forms an important part of the Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape, which was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.
Take your time walking through the monastery complex, learning about its history and architecture.
Museum opening hours currently listed by the Orkhon Valley administration:
- May 1–September 30: 09:00–18:00 daily
- October 1–April 30: 09:00–17:00 on weekdays
🐎 Meet a Mongolian Nomadic Family

In the afternoon, experience one of the most personal parts of your journey.
Visit a local Mongolian family and step inside a traditional ger.
Depending on the season and the family’s daily activities, you may:
- Taste traditional dairy products
- Drink Mongolian milk tea
- Learn how a ger works
- Meet horses and livestock
- Learn about everyday nomadic life
- Talk with the family about life on the steppe
This is not designed as a staged performance.
It is an opportunity to meet local people and learn about contemporary Mongolian life.
🌅 Evening in Kharkhorin
Return to your accommodation.
Enjoy a relaxed dinner and, if weather permits, take time to experience the open Mongolian night sky.
Overnight: Kharkhorin
🌾 DAY 3 — Kharkhorin → Ulaanbaatar
Approximately 5–6 hours of driving + stops
Enjoy a relaxed morning before beginning the journey back to Ulaanbaatar.
The road from Kharkhorin to Ulaanbaatar is approximately 357–360 km, with typical drive estimates around five hours before sightseeing stops.
We won’t simply drive straight through.
Your private guide can make scenic stops along the way depending on:
- Your interests
- Weather
- Road conditions
- Available daylight
- How much time you want to spend on the road
Arrive back in Ulaanbaatar in the afternoon or evening.
